Understanding Time Tracking

Learn how Magoosh calculates and reports time spent by students on the platform.

Time tracking helps you understand student engagement and can be used as part of your grading or accountability system.

How Time is Calculated

Magoosh tracks time spent when students are actively engaged with :

  • Watching lesson videos
  • Answering practice questions
  • Working on a quiz
  • Watching explanation videos
  • Taking practice tests or exams

What is not included:

  • Time spent reading explanations
  • Passive time just sitting in the product
  • Working on reviewing with the AI tutor
Accuracy Considerations

Time tracking is a helpful indicator,  but it has some limitations. It's mainly a sum of time when students can see a clock running during a video or practice sessions.  Some students pause more than others or take longer. We have tried our best to capture active time and limit capturing inactive time, but there are always exceptions. You can also view other things, like time spent answering questions, to give you a holistic picture.

Using Time Data Effectively

There are many ways to use this data, but we'll discuss a few of the most common options.

For Engagement Monitoring
  • Compare the time spent across students to identify those who may need encouragement
  • Look for patterns, students with very low time may need intervention or are not taking the program seriously
  • Use time data alongside performance data for a complete picture
For Grading
  • Set minimium time expectations as part of participation grades
  • Combine time spent with assignment completion rates
  • Consider quality (performance) alongside quantity (time)
Benchmarks
  • We recommend students spend at least 30 hours working in the product for score improvement
  • Students typically need 40 - 60 hours of total study time to achieve meaningful score improvement.
  • Weekly goals: Aim for 4-6 hours per week for a 10-week study plan
